Minimally invasive parathyroidectomy

The commonest cause of primary hyperparathyroidism is a single parathyroid adenoma (benign tumour). If this can be identified pre-operatively then a minimally invasive operation targeting a single gland through a small neck incision ( usually 2-3cm) may be possible.   This operation is associated with shorter recovery and minimal risks.
Parathyroid adenomas can be identified with three different scans

  1. Ultrasound
  2. Sestamibi (radioactive isotope scan)
  3. 4D CT scan

Dr Gough and Dr Stringer perform ultrasound as part of the consultation, as surgeon performed ultrasound is often more successful at identifying parathyroid adenomas that regular ultrasound.
